‘get your cannons ready, light the wick. it will take more than an argument to change my mind. so why keep trying? you will never talk me out of it.’
pitchfork went ahead and bestowed their honor of ‘best new album’ upon youth lagoon’s debut album, the year of hibernation. it’s quite a heady accomplishment for 22-year old trevor powers. this kid claims that listening to his album is like reading his journal…it’s a montage of feelings and emotions that he could never really express through words alone. only through the use of music is he able to convey these things inside of him. while the music may seem dreamy and slightly upbeat at first, try to focus on a few of the lyrics and you’ll get an idea for the kind of pain and anxiety that powers has inside of him. it reminds me of another young, wise soul who we posted not too long ago, king krule. the year of hibernation is definitely not my album of the year, but sometimes it hits the spot and i particularly like the melody behind this track, cannons.
